DIFFERENT CAFE
RIYADH, KSA
Eat / Drink / Socialize
Altavia.odg was initially invited to work on a special project in Saudi by an F&B consultant based in Dubai. The client himself was a businessman from Saudi, who wanted a very qualitative coffee shop. During his trip to Dubai, after selecting the consultant, he engaged with one of the top chefs in Dubai to define the food offering and altavia.odg for translating his idea into a design reality. For this reason, the term coffee shop however is somehow incorrect, as it would be reductive on the scope of this unique project. This F&B outlet, in fact, serves prime quality food comparable to fine dining restaurants. The design was initially developed for two different spaces and locations. The two layout options have been crafted in a way that utilizes the entirety of the space without making it feel cramped or too open. The layouts answer to the customer journey in every way and form. The pilot store was made of 2 floors with rooftop terrace allowing the design to flow and breathe, while customers can indulge in a flavourful meal throughout the day. The design was then rolled out into a smaller size, within the mall premises. Little by little the narrative of this restaurant became one with the idea to make things differently, hence the brand name: Different. From the approach to the café/restaurant, almost as if you were thrown back to the street cafes one might find in Europe, standing out from the other cafes one might find in Saudi Arabia.
Visually the presence of quirky graphics, with big lines cutting shapes into two as part of the branding identity across all senses, combined with high quality ingredients for the food and coffee, create the right mixture of winning factors for the birth of a Different kind of restaurant/café.
The storefront has been designed in such a way that it echoes the classic bakery’s found throughout Europe with their very unique style of shopfront portal.
The shopfront allows Different to stand out on the street, and allows passers by a view into the coffee shop that will surely awaken a curiousness when one peers through the windows and sees the freshly backed breads and cakes on display in the window.
The coffee bar to the left is one of two centre pieces to the floor space. A marble and copper hub where fresh coffees and teas fill the space with pungent aromas.
The seating area is somewhat small yet it sits amongst the hive and the activity that makes up Different. With the coffee bar to right and the kitchen and preparation areas to the left, people really get a feel of what makes Different run. With simple bench and table seating, the ground floor is the perfect place to come and grab a quick bite to eat or sip a latte while checking those emails before your next meeting. What makes this space so perfect is its proximity to the coffee being prepared as well as the cakes and meals being baked and cooked. A real theatre for the senses.
